The Jewish Theater's 2008/2009 Season

As both the USA and Israel face a future under new political leaders, The Jewish Theater of New York visits American citizens in Israel in the upcoming MOUNTAIN JEWS, opening November 9, 2008. The Jewish Theater of New York is also proud to inform the public that LAST JEW IN EUROPE, playing on the New York stage for almost two years, will resume performances in 2009. LAST JEW is currently being performed overseas at the outstanding Teatr Na Woli in Warsaw, Poland.

MOUNTAIN JEWS tells the story of the righteous Isaac, a young Orthodox Jew from Brooklyn who observes his community's laws and never dates women. When he finally gets married, Isaac schleps his new bride to a dark and sacred mountain in Israel directly below the "Gate of Paradise" (see pix HERE) in order to consummate their marriage in a Holy Spot. His bride, known in the USA as "the most beautiful, Kosher American Jewess in the North East and the Bible belt," prefers to spend the night eating some fresh rugelach (cookies) instead. When the cookies are finished and Isaac is just about to get his wish, a creature calling himself Prophet Muhammad suddenly shows up and declares that unless he gets the bride for himself, "my followers will blow themselves up in Gaza, Mali, Detroit, Denmark, Pakistan, Chicago and al-Quds to protect my lost honor." But before this Prophet can get any bride he must contend with a Jewish Goddess, mother of all Divas, who also shows up on the mountain and has her own set of demands.

LAST JEW IN EUROPE, which won many accolades from international theater critics, tells the story of love between a nebbish Polish man and his beautiful fiancee in the city of Lodz, Poland. Knowing of his bride's distaste for Jews, the groom never reveals his Jewish identity to her -- claiming instead to be a "Christian Atheist." But two days before their wedding a Mormon missionary from Utah, on an assignment to uncover Jewish families in Lodz, arrives in town and declares that the groom is none other than the son of a famous German Nazi and that the bride is actually Jewish. Will the two still marry each other?
