So, How Are the Jews Doing?

Sixty-seven years after the Holocaust, The Jewish Theater of New York explores today's Germany in "I Sleep in Hitler’s Room: An American Jew Visits Germany," a publication that was censored in Germany in 2011.

In addition, we are proud to announce that our show, The Last Virgin, is being produced this season by The National Theater of Luxembourg.

At a time when anti-Semitism is an issue most of us don't want to deal with -- either because we think it doesn't exist or because we fault Israel for it – The Jewish Theater of New York (JTNY) announces the publication of "I Sleep in Hitler's Room: An American Jew Visits Germany," a scathingly factual document about the alarming rate of anti-Semitism in today's Germany, written by Tuvia Tenenbom, artistic director of the JTNY.

Tuvia, who is also a columnist for Die Zeit, Germany's most influential paper, was commissioned by German publisher Rowohlt to write a book about present-day Germany. Travelling for almost six months throughout the country, and visiting close to 40 cities, Tuvia discovered that the majority of Germans, knowingly or subconsciously, still harbor anti-Semitic views. In addition, in a land where the legal system imposes mandatory jail sentences for denying the Holocaust, Tuvia discovered neo-Nazi clubs that not only deny the Holocaust, but also advocate the killing of all Jews today. Rowohlt, one of the largest German publishers, promptly censored the book, claiming that the existence of neo-Nazi clubs is not an issue the public cares to know about. The JTNY, in response, is making the book available, in English. "I Sleep in Hitler's Room: An American Jew Visits Germany" is available as paperback on Amazon.com, and as an eBook for the Kindle, iPad and Nook. The JTNY will also present "I Sleep in Hitler's Room: An American Jew Visits Germany" as a theatrical event on stage, date TBA soon.

We believe that exposing anti-Semitic trends is important, and we are proud that the prestigious Suhrkamp publishing company in Berlin will make the book available in German in September 2012.

From the Early Reviews of "I Sleep in Hitler's Room":

"Tuvia Tenenbom comes off as a Jewish Hunter S. Thompson, describing cringing encounters that strip away the veneer of sanity from his subjects . . . Every encounter with an interview subject is an experimental drama, redolent sometimes of Pinter or Beckett, more often of Brecht or the Marx Brothers." –Asia Times

"Deeply sobering, depressing even, in its observations of the darker side of Germany, yet at the same time so chatty and engaging and laugh-out-loud funny that it's hard to put down." –PJ Media
